What is critical literacy anyway? Join us for this second session of the Culturally Relevant Teaching in Early Childhood Classrooms series where we will explore what critical literacy looks like in a K-2 classroom setting. In this session, members of the 2015-2017 cohort of the Professional Dyads of Culturally Relevant Teaching will share what they are learning from their own research and inquiry as they support children in the culturally meaningful and engaging practice of uncovering and critically discussing underlying messages within texts.
Sandra L. Osorio is an assistant professor at Illinois State University. Her work focuses on critical multicultural literacy practices and Latinx children’s critical consciousness development.
Sara Carrillo is a bilingual elementary teacher in Urbana,Illinois. She is a first-year teacher striving to bring culturally relevant literature and incorporate children’s funds of knowledge into classroom practice.
Rachel Gilmore is a 5th-year elementary school teacher for the Atlanta Public Schools District. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia and recently earned a Masters in Early Childhood Education from the University of West Georgia. Rachel is passionate about giving all students opportunity and power through voice. “Reading and writing helps students connect with the world around them, both on and off the page.”
Roberta Price Gardner is a clinical assistant literacy professor at Georgia State University. Her work focuses on African American children’s literature and visual ar, and explores how social constructs such as race, place, class, and gender influence the reading and writing practices of African American children.
