What happens when young children and their questions become the heart of the curriculum? Join us for this third session of the Culturally Relevant Teaching in Early Childhood Classrooms series where we will explore risks and rewards of inquiry in K-2 classroom settings.  In this session, hear from members of the 2015-2017 cohort of the Professional Dyads and Culturally Relevant Teaching initiative who are exploring the power of inquiry curriculum to accomplish their shared goal: to provide their young students with classroom learning that is culturally responsive. Presenters will convey lessons learned about the power of inquiry by sharing an illustration of real classroom learning in action and will demonstrate how they articulate the rationale for inquiry to families and administrators.


PDCRT group photo Summer 2016Tasha Tropp Laman is an associate professor at the University of Louisville in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program. She is also the director of the Nystrand Center of Excellence in Education. She studies children’s writing practices.

Janelle Henderson  is a second grade teacher at J.B. Atkinson Academy in Louisville, Kentucky. She just finished her first year of teaching.

Michele Myers is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the MAT Coordinator for the Elementary Teacher Education Program at the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include creating culturally relevant curricula and helping teachers appreciate the diverse ways that families and communities support children in ways that are not often recognized as legitimate.  

Kathy Epps is a kindergarten teacher at Lake City Early Childhood Center in Lake City, South Carolina. Her professional interest includes providing a culturally relevant curriculum where all students are able to reach their full potential.

Sha’shray McCormack is a kindergarten teacher at Mill Creek Elementary in Louisville, Kentucky. Her professional interests include creating anti-racist curricula for early childhood classrooms using culturally responsible resources and practices.
