The speaking and listening section of the Common Core State Standards notes the value of collaborative conversations in which students learn the rules for conversations, use evidence in their arguments, and critically analyze the topic at hand. These collaborative conversations should involve complex texts and opportunities for written expression. We can’t expect students to succeed with this complex skill if we don’t explicitly teach them how to have a collaborative conversation. This one-hour Web seminar will focus on the instructional routines that ensure that students develop the habits necessary to engage with their peers. Participants in this session will:
- Understand the foundational relationship of collaborative conversations for meeting CCSS-ELA standards.
- Identify collaborative learning arrangements that foster productive group interactions.
- Examine the ways in which collaborative conversations are structured to meet the needs of English learners.
