The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Language make clear the importance of students' ability to determine or clarify the meaning of grade-appropriate words encountered across the disciplines, but many teachers struggle with knowing which words are most important to teach and how to teach them so that students fully understand and know how to use them accurately.
Join Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey to learn effective ways to teach vocabulary! During this one-hour Web seminar we will:
- Explore the ways in which vocabulary expectations are expressed in the Common Core State Standards.
- Compare general academic and domain-specific vocabulary.
- Learn an effective 5-step process to build an intentional vocabulary initiative in your school, including specific examples from across the disciplines.
You'll walk away better equipped to prepare your students to "Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression."
